How to Troubleshoot Document Upload Processing Errors

Last updated: November 11, 2025

Common Upload Limitations

When uploading documents to Document Crunch, be aware of these limitations:

  • Maximum file size: 500MB

  • Maximum page count: 3,000 pages

Common processing issues

Even if your file meets the size requirements, you may encounter processing errors. Common causes include:

  • Large drawing files - Dense technical drawings, blueprints, or Gantt charts with extensive lines and detail can overload the OCR system and cause processing timeouts. Normal-sized images mixed with text pages generally process without issues.

  • Password-protected files - Remove password protection before uploading

  • Unsupported file formats - Ensure your file is in a supported format (PDF, Word doc, or scanned PDF)

  • Files with many images - Documents with numerous images may struggle to process even if under the size limit

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Clear your browser's cache and cookies

If you receive an error while processing, first try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, as this can resolve many common processing issues.

  2. Check document specifications

    • Ensure your document is under 3,000 pages

    • For documents approaching the limit, try splitting them into smaller files

    • Verify the file is not password protected or encrypted

  3. Try Universal Doc solution type

If standard processing fails, you can try uploading the document as a "Universal Document" solution type. This alternative processing method is ideal if you are uploading a more complex, non-contract document type, such as drawings or Gantt charts. While you cannot apply a checklist to this solution type, you can still chat with your document.

Note: For documents heavy with drawings or technical diagrams, you can upload without applying any checklist or playbook to bypass the intensive text recognition processing while still maintaining chat functionality.

Additional Information

If you continue to experience issues after trying these steps, the document may have specific formatting or content that's causing processing problems. In these cases, you can:

  • Try uploading a different version of the document if available

  • Split large documents into smaller sections

  • Contact support at support@documentcrunch.com if the issue persists
